OUR MISSION
How having access to a mobile shower helped me end my homelessness
Shower the People is an interfaith, community-based mobile shower program that offers showers to homeless and critically low income people. We are the first mobile shower program in South County San Luis Obispo.
Our hope is that by providing our homeless access to a warm shower, we will enhance their opportunities to more comfortably integrate into the community.
A warm shower is a blessing. Our mobile shower gives those most in need the opportunity to clean themselves with privacy and dignity on a regular basis.
Please follow us on Instagram or Facebook for COVID-19 related updates.
The three-unit shower trailer provides three private bathrooms, each equipped with a sink, toilet, and full shower and dispensers of biodegradable soap and shampoo. We supply clean towels, washcloths, toiletries, socks, and underwear. Our hope is that by meeting this basic human need of cleanliness we can help generate a sense of stability and self esteem that is needed in order to find employment and housing.
Shower the People offers showers to homeless and critically low income people around San Luis Obispo County. The program provides showers at locations in Grover Beach, Oceano, and San Luis Obispo, and continues to seek out opportunities in other locations where home-challenged people regularly gather.
A mobile shower unit allows us the flexibility of locating at sites where our homeless community gather to eat or to receive services. We offer easy access, a safe environment, and a reliable schedule. We follow protocols successfully used in a sister program, Showers of Blessing in Santa Barbara. Volunteers staff our sites along with an on-site supervisor.
What Can I Do?
You can make a big difference by donating, volunteering, and by sharing our mission.
COVID-19 Update
Providing showers to our most vulnerable neighbors during the COVID-19 pandemic.
On May 15 Shower the People got the OK from the County to reopen our showers. Because of the kind support and donations from Arroyo Grande Community Hospital, the Community Foundation’s Disaster Relief Fund and the United Way of San Luis Obispo’s Rapid Relief Fund, and because of the many individual donations from the people in our community, Shower the People was able to restart our mobile shower program on June 2nd. We reworked our processes with a renewed focus on safety for clients and volunteers. See Locations—Days—Hours of Operation below for our current schedule.
Every shower guest receives a mask, 2oz bottle of hand sanitizer, and a package of 30 biodegradable outdoor wipes by Trail Blazer.
Shower the People believes that during this time of the COVID pandemic it is more imperative than ever to help our most vulnerable neighbors.
