About Shower the People
Our vision for a mobile shower for the homeless began in 2014 when a group from the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in San Luis Obispo attended a conference in Santa Barbara. Showers of Blessing had their mobile shower unit on site for all to view. Volunteers for their program spoke to us about their successful shower program that provides showers to the homeless in Santa Barbara County. All of us from San Luis Obispo agreed that a mobile shower program was needed for homeless people in San Luis Obispo County too.
From that day forward a committed group of volunteers has planned and built a mobile shower program for San Luis Obispo County. Shower the People became a 501c3 nonprofit organization in May of 2017. Our mission is to provide access to a warm shower to as many homeless people in our community as possible. Our program is entirely supported by grants and donations from religious (interfaith) churches, organizations, and individual donors in our community. Our program is run by volunteers like you.
In June of 2018 we ordered our three-unit mobile shower using a generous grant from Presbyterian Women USA. We opened our shower doors to homeless people in September 2018.
We continue to look for additional sites for the shower to operate. Commonly we offer showers for three hours a day per site. Contact us if you would like to join our all-volunteer team, or if you know of sites where we could offer our mobile shower services to homeless people.
